A HUGE GAMBLE THAT FAILED
THE SECRET BEHIND A HOT FAVOURITE. One of the biggest gambles of the flat-racing season, by a professional backer, failed during the llibury Club meeting at Salisbury recently. Hardy, a two-year-old jowned by Sir Charles Hyde, and privately trained by 1 Scobie, was the medium of bets to the | extent of about £5,000. j The horse was backed throughout the country by ' a carefully-arranged i elan but even though the bookmakers on the course “calked” the horse down j to 6 to 4 on, money still poured in for ! the colt, and it started a. hot favourite, j The great gamble failed. Those who I had inspired the attempted coup saw : Fortunate Lady, a rank outsider, and | Yellow Cloud, another unfancied runner; beat the favourite into third place. Five thousand pounds went to bookmakers throughout the country. Sir Charles Hyde paid £7.500 for Hardy last year, a record price for a yearling last season.
