SCHOOL BURSERIES

DEPARTMENT’S POLICY. NO INFORMATION AVAILABLE. CHRISTCHURCH, September 10. Although the Junior National Scholarships formerly awarded by the Education Department have been abolished this year, no indication has yet been given as to how the bursaries which have been substituted for the scholarships are to be awarded. Mr 0. R. Kirk,.secretary of the Canterbury Education Board, said yesterday that so far no information had been received by the board regarding the bursaries. He could not say what number of bursaries was to be ■ awarded or what their value would be. Last year, he explained, thirty Junior National Scholarships were awarded in the Canterbury and West Coast district. These scholarships had a value of £5 a year, plus an allowance of £35 for children required to live away from their homes. As the proficiency ceitificate entitled a child to a free place at secondary schools, including- the Girls’ and Boys’ High School, district high schools, and technical schools, it would not be surprising if the bursaries were practically restricted to country children. > Apart from the,. State scholarships, (there are a number of private scholarships awarded in the Canterbury Kcliw cation ‘District annually and entries for these are now being invited. -So far no special examinations have been arranged for, but it is probable that the pupils entering for these scholarships will be required to sit for certain of the subjects at specified centres later in the year. These scholarships have mostly been provided by endowments by individuals and* organisations.
