Too P.-lice Chief bad been actively warring aga.-nst the sly grog shops and the bootleggers. The act is believed to have been dictated by revenge. At Hartford (Alabama) Chief Police Roady, and an ex-Mayor, J. Radford, shot each other to death in a quarrel over the use of a road-making machine before the ex-Mayor’s home. FATAL CAOL RIOT. NEW YORK, September 9. At Salt Lake City, one convict was ki.led, one guard was fatally wounded, and four others, including the Gaol Warden Were injured during an outbreak to-day in the Utah State Penitentiary. Convicts used prison-made bomba and knives in nil attempt to gain their freedom, Great confusion attended the riot, in which the Deputy-Wardian was, for a time, held prisoner by the convicts, and he was released by the Warden, who then directed the guards to fire at the cell houses in order to prevent the convicts from getting into the prison yard. Ultimately order was restored.
