ASSAULT ON HOCKEY FIELD

Morris S.M., wlion Her liert Cecil Hewlett was charged in 'the Magistrate’s Court to-day with assault mg Richard Wynston Johns while playing in a hockey match at Whangarei on August 8. ; Johns said that he was captain of the Mja'ta team which, wins playing, against Whangarei, when he saw one of bis players named Salmon bit Hewlett. Hewlett retaliated and Jolj'ns endeavoured to stop the quarrel. Me pushed Hewlett aside. Accused then bit him' with liis stick on the head, causing injuries which kept him in hospital for thirteen days. Eric R. Stain ton, who was referee, said that when the assault occurred lie had intended to order Salmon off ti e field. He saw Hewlett strike Jehus. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £1 with 12s costs. He made the fine « small one, anticipating that a civ] claim for hospital expenses wqu <1 follow.
