RAILWAY REPORT

ALMOST COMPLETED. WELLINGTON, September 8. It is understood that the report which the Railway Board is obliged to present to Parliament with respect to railway' lines under construction and lines on which work has been suspended is almost completed. The question is set down on the agenda for consideration at to-morrow's meeting of the Board, but there is some doubt as to whether it. will be reached, as other import-, ant matters are also coming up. The report as bding awaited with much interest, especially in the South Island, on account of the rapid progress which has been mad© with the South Island Main Trunk line, and the fact that the construction work has proceeded to a' point where less than thirty miles remain to ho completed. TJnder the terms of the Finance Act of 1931, Mr H. H. Sterling, retired last week from the position of general man. ager, and lie has now taken over the chairmanship of the hoard from Colonel Esson, who was appointed to that position temporarily, pending the expiry of Mr Sterling’s service of thirty years in the Railway Department. The Board has yet to make a recom- | mendation to the Governor-General in the matter of a successor to Mr Sterling in the general managership.
