ADULTERATED MILK

SIXTEEN PER, CENT. WATER, AUCKLAND, August 29. On a charge of selling adulterecl milk in which was 16 per cent, of added water, Charles John Barker, a fanner, was fined £5 and costs by Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court this morning. “Unfortunately, I can find no defence to this charge, alhej I am forced to plead guilty,” said Mr Allan Moody, who appeared for defendant. An .inspector . of. the Health Department safd that inj 1925 defendant had been fined £lO for a similar offence. ,At. .that time he had 9 per; cent, added w'ater in his milk, .which he-.sent to a s ciTy vendor. .'Mr. Moody, explained that. it was the practice of dairy farmers, after they had washed their cans, to leave a certain amount of water in the bottom to keep the can sweet. On this occasion a girl had put the milk in without first emptying the water out. Defendant had been quite frank about the whole matter.
