CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP. [By Telegraph. Per Free* Aanooiation.) AUCKLAND, August 29. The Dominion cross-country, cham*. pionship, held to day in fine weather, was won by J. W. Savidan (Auckland) from N. F. Cooper (Auckland); H. Johnson (Otago) was third. Otago won the teams’ race, finishing third, .fourth, sixth, and seventh, and securing 20 points. Auckland was second' with 25 points, and Wanganui third with 28 points. MAN’S TRAGIC DEATH. •MARTON, August 29.' As the result of a tragic occurrence in Bulls yesterday afternoon, a wellknown local resident, Alfred J. Green, a single man, aged 48, died in the Palmerston North Hospital late last night, following injuries from gunshot wounds in the jaw and face. , . Green was. a former Rugby player and a keen enthusiast. He was dis'ussing arrangements for a match for the Bulls team with, a fellow . coaoh and employer, Harry Holland, ten minutes before the tragedy happened. An inquest will be held at Palmerston to-day. The injuries are thought to have been self-inflicted. AN AERO SOMERSAULT . WANGANUI/ August 29. While Dr. K. Christie was practising landing on "the sduth beach early this morning, the wheels of the aeroplane stuck in the soft sand and the ’plane somersaulted, breaking the propeller. Dr. Christie was not Injured. A new propeller was available nnd the machine was in commission again within an hour. SCRUB SIRES. ELIMINATION SUPPORTED. DUNEDIN, August 29. Tile Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association wrote to the Otago Society asking for support for a proposal that steps be taken to improve the flocks and herds of the Dominion. The association ’ believed that the elimination of scrub sires from sales would be a big step towards the advancement of the standard of sheep cattle, horses and pigs. -It was decided to support Canterbury in its proposals.
