POSTAL NOTES

SALE OF COMMISSION ANOMALIES REMOVED. FOfiTY-ONE DENOMINATIONS. Glaring anomalies in the scale of commissionfe charged on the issue of postal notes by the Postal Department have been removed as the result of the increasing of the denominations of the notes.

The anomalies that existed were some time ago pointed out by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce and the matter was later taken up by the Associated Chambers of Commerce. The result of the agitation was that on Thursday of last week new rates of poundage on postal notes were gazetted.

Some of the anomalies in existence hitherto have been very glaring. For instance, the poundage l on a postal note for 10/ was 2d but in order to remit an additional 6d an additional 3d by way of poundage was chargeable. If, on the other hand an additional 1/ was required, bringing the award up to 11/, only Id additional poundage as compared with the poundage' on 10/ was necessary. There were other anomalies qu te as glaring. The new scale eliminates these by issuing a wider range of postal notes than that previously available. Now postal notes are to be issued in denominations involving every sum containing an integral number of sixpences from 1/ to 20/. The anomalies hitherto in force were largely due to the fact that there were insufficient different denominations of postal notes these formerly having been restricted to: 1/, 1/6, 2/, 2/6, 3/, 5/, 10/ 15/ and, 2)/.

The iollowing table prepared by the Secretary*of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce,' Dr E. P. Neale, shows the new rates as compared with those hitherto in force, the old poundnnge being given in parentheses: Denomination 1/, new poundage Id (Id); 1/6, Id (Id); 4 id (Id); 2/6, Id (Id); 3/, 2d (2d); 3/6, 2d (2d); 4/, 2d (2d); 4/6, 2d (2d); 5/ 2d (2d); 5/6, 2d (3d); 6/, 2d (3d) 6/6, 2d (3d); 7/, 2d (3d); 7/6, 2d (3d); p/, 3d (4d); 8/6, 3d (4d); 9s, 3d (4d); 9/6. 3d (4d); 10/, 3d (2d); 10/6, 3d (sd); 11/, 3d (3d); 11/6, 3d (3d); 12/, 3d (3d); 12/6. 3d (3d); 13/, 3d (4d); 13/6, 3d /'Id); 14/, 3d (4d); 14/6, 3d (4d) ; 15//3d (2d) ; 15/6, 4d (sd); 16/, 4d (3d) •16/6. 4d (3d); 17/,' 4d (3d) ;_l7/6, 4d (3d); 18/, 4d' (4d); 18/6, 4d (4d); 19/, 4d (4d); 19/6, 4d (4d); 20/5 4d (3d); 20/6, 5d (sd); 21/, 5d (4d).
