CRICKET

THE NEW ZEALAND TOUR.

AGAINST KENT,

KENT’S BIG SCORE.

WOOLLEY 224, AMES 115

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.)

(Received this day at 9.25 a.m) CANTERBURY Aug. 27

Magnificent batting by Woolley gave Kent a first innings lead of 111 and at stumps New Zealand had seven wickets in hand and were forty-nine behind.

New Zealanders weak catching' was large responsible for Kent’s good score. Woolley attacked the bowling from the start. He was missed early by Matheson at short slip, off Merritt. He played beautiful free shots all round the wicket and his driving was especially fine. After passing the century he gave three chances in the outfield to Blunt. Mills and Alleott. Finally Blunt made amends. Woolley batted 184 minutes and hit five sixes and twenty four fours.

With Ames he compiled 277 for the fifth wicket. Ames gave two chances, but his was a sound display. He batted for 108 minutes and hit one six and fourteen fours.

New Zealand batted for eighty-five minutes before stumps and at one stage had lost three wickets for nine.

Blunt, and Weir hatted cautiously and stopped the rot. The attendance was six thousand,
