PERTH, August 26
The proposed merging of the West Australian Savings Bank into the Commonwealth Bank has been almost completed. The bank authorities emphasise 'that the merger is not due to the Australian bank experiencing any difficulties rvith the State Government. The authorities are merely proceeding with the present scheme as part of an economy policy. The .ilatest balance sheet of the State Savings Bank shows the deposits are eight and a halt millions sterling, while the gross earnings in 1930 were £091,480, and the profits £16,500. SAVINGS BANK BILL. SYDNEY. August 27 The Government Savings Bank Bill passed the. Upper House after several sub clauses were added. One additional clause will have the effect of limiting the period of moratorium till the ond of 1933. Previously it had been for an indeterminate period. TR APPED BY FIB El. SYDNEY, August 27, Three girls and five youths were trapped on the second floor of Brit-esli-ine Company’s., factory. Newtown, when a lire ■destroyed the building. They attempted to lower themselves by a hoist, but the rope jammed in the block and they were forced to jump into the street. He was a prominent golfer and cricketer of New South Wales aged thirty-two. He ds a brother of Doctor R. H. Bettington, golfer and cricketer.
