The first economy measure urged by the United Government, the 10 per cent reduction in wages and salaries, has h.ad far-reaching results, states the “Christchurch Times.” Some people even allowed thoughts of it to rankle when they were away in the mountains seeking pleasure. Some time ago the Prime Minister (Mr Forbes) stayed a while at the hostel at Arthur’s Pass, and while there was induced to sign his name in the visitors’ book. On Sunday another visitor idly glancing through the book while waiting for the rain to ease off, came across the signature, “G. W. Forbes, Hurunui,” and after it, written in pencil and with evident bitterness, the words, “less 10 per cent.”

The Westport “Times” says;— Forming out to sea, a waterspout swept in shore at about 2.46 on Mon* day afternoon nnd came across Brougham Street, near Mr McKenzie's house and disappeared in the hills. The phenomenon was heralded by a distinct rattling noise ' and on crossing Brougham Street it scoured out the gravel. Some clothes on a line at Mr McKenzie’s were ripped off and whirled away. Branches of trees were stripped off and flung in the air. However, the spout traversed country in which not much damage could be done. If it had struck the town proper the damage would have been considerable.
