PARLIAMENT
THE HOUSE. (By Telegraph—Per P/es Association ) WELLINGTON, August 26. The House of Representatives met at 2.30 yesterday. After the formal business, the Prime Minister moved the adjournment til! 7.30 to enable the special committee, set up to examine the position of the country’s finances, to have an opportunity of meeting during the afternoon. He intimated that the committee wislito carry on during the morning and afternoon until Thursday.
Mr Parry—How long will the Committee he sitting. Mr Forbes—lt is difficult to say. He added that at the commencement of such an inquiry it was difficult to get a proper understanding as to what evidence should be taken or what procedure should he followed. Parliament would be approached later in the event of the Committee deciding it was necessary to adjourn the House for a few days.
The motion was adopted and the House adjourned at 2.50 p.m. LICENSING AMENDMENT. The House resumed at 7.30 p.m. The Licensing Poll Postponement Bill was introduced by Governor-Gen-eral’s message. The Bill consists of but two clauses, and is to be deemed part of the prindpal- Act, the Licensing Act, 1908. Notwithstanding anything to the \ contrary in the principal Act, says the Bill, no licensing poll shall be taken simultaneously. with any general election of members of Parliament that may be held at any time before December 31st- 1933. The result of the licensing poll taken in November 1928 is to continue in force until the licensing poll to be taken simultaneously with tho first general election of Members of Parliament, to be taken after December 31st. 1933. notwithstanding that the preceding Parliament may have been dissolved before it had been two years in existence. Mr McCombs called for a division at one of the preliminary stages, but after the bells bad been rung, he did not press the matter. The Bill was then read a first time. The Budget debate was resumed and was interrupted by the rising of the House at 10.30 p.m. until 7.30 this evening.
