WEST COAST RUGBY UNION.
The weekly- meeting of the West Coast Rugby Union .was held last evening.
The Secretary of the N.Z. Rugby Union wrote in reference to the : apeal by the United Club against the Union’s award of' a match to Blaketown junior club. The letter stated that the matter had been given careful consideration by the committee, who, had upheld the appeal of the United Club. Tjie game in question, played against Blaketown, was won by the United team, but Blaketown protested on the grounds that United had played Brunner'players, and the Union-had therefore ordered the match to be replayed. the decision of the N.Z. Union in favour of Uniteds in the appeal, obviates the necessity of a replay.
Arrangements were finalised for the Maori match to-morrow. Mr W. Biehepo was appointed manager of the West Coast team which is to assemble af the Park Hotel to-morrow at 2.3 U q’clpck, game 'to commence at 3 o’clock. Cobden A Juniors were granted permission to travel to Westport on Sep-, tepnber 12 to play a match as a cur-tain-raiser to the West uoast-Buller Se(jd°u 'Shield match.
Jtr Ryan moved that twenty players be’''.selected to go into training after th(r Maori match, for the Seddon Shield, the players chosen to train consistently until’ the match. £ The Secretary said Mr F. .Baillie had Offered his. isevvices to assist in training/the players selected. • The President said a number of playorg would have been given a trial in the Buller and Maori matches. /.■'Mr O’Donnell said the team | should assemble, a couple of days oefore the match.
Mr Ryan suggested that the first training night be Tuesday* next, the {president and Mr Baillie to train any players who could possibly train in Grey mouth.

Paiuru (WanOxley (Wanganui). CHANGES 'IN COAST TEAM. A. Lemin is unable to play in the West Coast team against the Maoris to-morrow, and it is also unlikely that J. King will be able to play. Both these players were injured in the Bul-ler-Coast match last Saturday. Any other players unavailable are requested to notify the selector, Mr A. Adams immediately, GUESSING COMPETITION. TO-MORROW’S OPPORTUNITY. Spectators at the Maori-West Coast match to-morrow who are , interested' in the weight guessing competition will be given every assistance towards judging the correct weight. The sheep selected, a four-tooth Border-Leicester wether, will be on view during • the afternoon, and all are invited to subject it to any test short of actually weighing it, before purchasing tickets. The purchaser of ten tickets, or more, guessing the correct or nearest weight will win as a special prize a four-day trip to the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers with all hotel and other accommodation provided free, The proceeds of the competition will be used for the purpose of improving the Rugby Union's new football ground and children’s playground, by the construction
of swings and see-saws. It is hoped that the public will respond generously ■in assisting this worthy object. RANFURLY SHIELD. OTAGO CHALLENGE. DUNEDIN. August 24. At the meeting of the Otago Rugby Union to-night, it was decided to issue a challenge to the Canterbury Union for the Ranfurly Shield. CHRISTCHURCH, August 24. This is only the second time since the Ranfurly Shield was first played for in 1904-5 that Canterbury has been the holder. The Ranfurly Shield was presented by Lord Ranfurly in 1902, but it was notr until September 7th, 1927, that Canterbury won it. It was allotted to Auckland as the province with the best record. Since then the holders have been : Auckland—l9o2, ISCS-13. Wellington—l9o4-5, 1914-20, 1921-22, 1930-31. Taranaki—l9l3-14. Hawkes Bay—-1922-27, 192'#. Wairarapa—l927, 1928-29. Manawhenua —1927. Canterbury^—l 927-28. Southland—1920-21, 1929-30.
SECONDARY SCHOOLS TOURNEY
TIMARU, August 24
The annual South Island Secondary Schools Rugby Tournament commenced hare to-day in fine weather. The ground was heavy. The attendance was large for an off day. Christchurch defeated last year's champions, 'Southland, by 21 points to six, after a fine exhibition. In the second match, Otago beat Timaru by eight points to six. The play was very even, the Otago forwards being slightly superior. The tournament concludes on Wednesday, Christchurch and Otago meeting in the final.
COLLEGE TOURNEY
WANGANUI, August 24
Defeating Wanganui Golh'g ate School by 28 points to 14, the Wellington College won the 1931 inter-College Rugby Championship to-day, and thoroughly deserved the victory. Nelson filled the role of runners-up, defeating Christs College by seven to three. Wellington gained two wins, Nelson College a win and a loss, and Christ’s College and Wanganui ~ollege a draw and a loss each.
