SHORT-WAVE SETS
POST AND TELEGRAPH DEPARTMENT. CHRISTCHURCH, Augsst 24. A , system of low-power short-wave wireless transmitting sets is now being installed by the Post and Telegraph Department throughout New Zealand to provide means of communication in case of emergency. In the Canterbury district set s are already installed in Kararnea, Westport. , Grey mouth and Christchurch, and a. set is being stalled in Timaru. There are other sets in the North Island.
The amateur transmitters ol the Dominion have for some time carried on a similar system, known as a guard system, by which every evening the central station in Wellington gets into touch with stations in all parts of the country.
The Government scheme is on similar lines, but contact will not be regularly established. In the event of land lines being destroyed, the sets will be brought into use. K The Government sets are so arranged that they can be worked from batteries in case of a failure of power.
The organisation of the Government scheme will in no way interfere with that of the amateurs, it is thought. 1
