COMMUNIST SENTENCED

CHRISTCHURCH, August 24

Donald George McGifford, 23, single, charged with assaulting Sergeant Hyland, lawlesness and disorderly behaviour during the Communist procession on August Ist. was sentenced, by Magistrate Mosley to one month’s hard labour on the first of two charges,and fined £2 in default 14 days. The Magistrate said the man was not level headed, hut must he taught a lesson. THEFT CHARGE. CHRISTCHURCH,, August 24. . James Thomas Toomey, 35, a clerk employed by the Postal Department was charged < to-day with theft of £34, the property of the Postmaster General. He was remanded to September Ist. The police said the sum involved was £4OO altogether, but it was not known if Toomey was concerned in all that amount. Bail was allowed at £2OO.
