COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS.
SMITH BEATS SIME
The final of the Men’s Golf Championship was played off at Omoto on Saturday .between A. Iv. Smith and A. G. Sime, the former winning by a stroke a>t the last hole. Givat interest was shown in the match by the large number of golfers who followed the play. The first round of 18 holes in the ‘morning finishrd with Smith 6 up. ;Smith was very consistent and was playing good golf, whereas Sime was a little erratic, missing some short putts. The second round commenced | in the afternoon and for the first 9 j holes Sime gained nothing on Smith, leaving the score 36 all with Smith six up. Over the next nine holes Sime played .superb golf and (squared the match at the 3'sth hole. At the 06th hole Sime’s drive found the sand track. Smith’s drive was straight, but a little short of the green. Sime’s next shot from the bunker was a good one, .but went a little wide of the green. 1 Smith then executed a short chip shot, the ball resting ahout five feet from the pin. Sime’s third shot finished about a yard from the hole. Amidst great excitement, Smith with a five foot putt won the match and the West Coast Championship/ fame’s play in the last, mine holes was superb, Smith’s win was a very popular one, ! •After the match all the players gathered at the Golf House where Mr W. Meldrum, President of the Greymouth Golf Club, 'presented trophies for the following championships. The trophies were handed to the respective winners by Mrs i West Coast Ladies’ Championship : Mrs J. W. Hannan; Runner-up, Mrs W. Cunningham.
West Coast Men’s Championship : Mr A. K. Smith. Runner-up, Mr A G. Sime.
The Dalgliesh Shield was presented to Mr A. G. 'Sime, captain of the Boiler Club.
FLAG MATCH. The men’s 'flag match played on Saturday resulted in a win for Mr . Coltman, who finished with one stroke down the nineteenth fairway. The Ifinal bogey match resulted in a win for Mrs Gore Porter with 3 down. Miss D. H&mbleton G down) and Miss Warnes (6 down) were the runnersup. AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP. (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, August 23. The open goid championship of Australia opened yesterday on the Kensington links with an 18 holes stroke •handicap. Play was marred by a westerly gale. Jim Ferrier, the 'N.S W amateur champion, recorded the best round in seventy-four.
