The death took’ place at Reefton Hospital on Friday afternoon of Mrs Mary Cahill, a very old resident of the district, having been in Reefton for over fifty years. For some considerable time past Mrs Cahill had been in failing health, and about a month ago entered Reefton Hospital, where she gradually failed and passed away as stated. The deceased, who was a Widow, her husband having died many years ago, was a native of Ireland and 80 years of age.
There is a possibility that women school teachers may be required to resign when they marry if a recommendation made by the Canterbury Education Board to the Director of Education, Mr T. B. Strong, is included in new legislation. The question was brought up by Mr Wild, who asked Mr Strong to consider the suggested amendment, with power to reappoint the teachers if necessary. An amendment on these lines would bring the service into line with the accepted business practice. Mr Strong said that -he would bring this phase of the matter before the Minister.

There were fifteen fewer deaths from cancer in the past year than the preceding twelve months. “The New Zealand Branch of the British Empire Cancer 'Campaign Society,” states the DfrectorGeneral of -Health in his annual report, “is proving a very active force in dealing with this too prevalent disease. The puolic have generously subscribed to this organisation, and thanks are due to them for their liberal support. The research work being carried out by Dr A. M. Begg at the Medical Scuool, Dunedih, under the control of a central committee of the society, is steaefilj adding to the knowledge of this disease in New Zealand, and leading, I hope to its ultimate conquest."
An accident, which luckily was without serious consequences, occurred on the Kumara straight yesterday afternoon, when a Chevrolet car, driven by Mr Johnson, of Runanga, skidded in some loose shingle on the road, and catapulted over a fairly steep bank into a water-hole. The car was half submerged and the occupants received a good soaking. The car stood on end, the radiator being considerably dam-aged-’by coming into contact with a stump. Lucidly the occupants of the car were unhurt. It was some time before the car was recovered from its watery resting place.
A party of about thirty scholars from West Cnristcliurcli District High School under two masters, arrived at Hokitika by the express on Saturday night and were billeted out at various residence. They were taken out yesterday for ■ a motor drive, and this afternoon are playing a football match on Cass Square against a team from the local school. This evening a team of the visitors will debate with a Hokitika team, the subject being “That Modern Industrialism is opposed to tli e interests and development of Mankind,” the visitors taking the affirmative. The party returns to Christchurch by the express to-morrow morn, ing. It is unfortunate that the weather has not been more favourable during their stay.
