FIREMEN ARRESTED
AFTER BOUT WITH POLICEMAN. (By Telegraph-—Per Press Association) : ' TIMARJJ, August 21. As the result of the fracas on the waterfront this afternoon, three firemen off the overseas vessel “Tainui,” were arrested on a charge of theft of bicycles and the assaulting of a constable. Two of the men were in town during the' afternoon, and were seen to take two bicycles, and proceed in the’ direction of the port. The owner of one bicycle informed a constable, and the pair followed the men to the wharf, where th e constable endeavoured to stop them. He secured the bicycles. Then the men took to him. The constable threw one man wfioivas held down by a bystander. A third fireman off the ship, who incited his mates to fight, and the second man, made aboard the ship. The constable followed them.
Further police and a detective arrived on the scene in response to calls and they also boarded the ship, where the two men were subsequently .arrested. At one period, the position looked serious .for the constable, but he was able to stand his ground, and, although he . was struck several times, he was not injured. - 1
