CYCLIST KILLED'BY TAXI

WELLINGTON, August 15.

A man, believed by the police to be Alexander Cavell, of Mclntyre Avenue, died at the Hospital as the result of injuries sustained when a bike that he was riding, and a taxi driven by J. TV. Wallace, collided at the corner of Taranaki and Buckle Streets, at 7 a.m.

EMBARGO ON BRITISH PIGS

WELLINGTON, August 15.

In reply to a query respecting the free importation of swine from Great Britain, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Murdoch, replied that the embargo has always applied to swine’ as well as to cattle und sheep. He said that there is no foundation for any statement made that swine coming from Great Britain have been allowed free entry into this Dominion.

HOMESTEAD BURNT.

BLENHEIM, August 17

»St. Maur homestead, owned and occupied by Arthur Jones, was totally destroyed by fire. It was a valuable dwelling of eleven main rooms. The occupants were lucky to escape in their night attire, nothing being saved.

GOVERNOR-GENERAL

WELLINGTON, August 16

The Governor-General is now convalescent. He was present for a short time on Saturday at the North v. South Island Rugby match at Athletic Park, Wellington. This morning (Monday), His Excellency; will preside at the meeting of the executive Council. Her Excellency, Lady Bledisloe was also present at Saturday’s inter-island Rugby match, arid at the conclusion she presented the Silver Loving Cup to the captains of the rival teams.
