Twelve are known to have been killed and thirty-eight injuried when the Rome-Vienna express collided with a goods train near Loeben. A heavier death roll is feared.
The engine left the rails, derailing seven coaches, several of which rolled down a slope.
Heartrending scenes were witness ed, rescuers cutting the telescoped coaches to pieces to reach the victims, including a number of children. It was necessary to amputate a Hungarian Priest’s leg to extricate him.
The driver, fireman, and guard o' the express hopped off at the last moment and escaped injury. Two stationmmasters have been ar rested.
