NEED FOR, THRIFT. The changed outlook concerning thrift in the, minds of young people leaving the schools came in for passing mention by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon.' G. W. Forbes, during the course of his reply to a deputation of educationist which waited upon him last week urging that there should not be any reduction in expenditure, especially upon secondary education. He said that in spite of the necessity for maintaining an efficient teaching service, one had to, ask whether piactical value waß being hud from the spending of huge sums annually, and although he did not lay the blame for the modern trend away from thriftiness at the door of the schools, it was their duty to advise those who passed through their portals of the necessity for providing for a "rainy day.
