MILFORD SOUND

EXPENDITURE ON HOSTEL

INVERCARGILL, August 13

The Council of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce to-day passed a resolution that the Minister in charge of Tourist and Health Resorts be requested to furnish a statement of revenue and expenditure connected with the Milford resort, with a view to the Chamber submitting suggestions for minimising the loss. In introducing the subject, Mr John GilkisOn said the Costs of Government and Government expenditure ill ail directions needed to lie drastically curtailed. He wished to move that the Minister be asked to furnish a statement of the capital outlay on the track, the hostel, and all branches of the service, including the gross takings and expenditure, and that the Minister be informed that if a return was supplied the Chamber might be able to offer suggestions for reducing the heavy loss. Air L. S. Spencer said the expenditure on the hostel buildings had been far too lavish. The Milford Hostel was much too elaborate, and was ahead of its time.
