UNEMPLOYED ON FARMS

NEARLY 9000 ENGAGED. SCHEME 4A TERMINATING'. Information concerning the Unemployment Board’s two farm schemes—--4A and 4B—is supplied by the Hon. S. G. Smith, who is Chairman of the Board, in the following statement:— “The productiveness of several thousand farms in the Dominion should be considerably increased,” said the Minister, “as a result of the work done under these schemes; but while that is a very satisfactory achievement, the Unemployment Board is especially gratified at the fact that nearly 9,000 unemployed married and single men have been provided for several months with a means of obtaining a livelihood. Since'the inception of Scheme 4A, totals of 6,075 single men. and 1,721 married men have been engaged, and the total for 4B is 1,000, Definite advice has been received that in quite a number of cases men employed under 4A have obtained permanent positions, “Because of the approach of that period of the year when seasonal labour is usually engaged, it has been decided that no further engagements un der Scheme 4A shall extend beyond 31st August-, The reason for this is to ensure that 4A workers shall not be put on to work that is ordinarily done by labour specially engaged for the purpose. The 4A Scheme provides for work of a developmental character, and not for milking and other seasonal tasks, “Many of the original contracts under 4A run beyond 81st August and farmers are expected to maintain the conditions of the contract one of which is that the labour taken on under it must be in addition to that which would otherwise be employed. “Local Unemployment Committees and Certifying Officers have bee n circularised with respect to the termination of Scheme No. 4A with a view to ascertaining the position concerning the contracts in existence in their districts. “The expenditure to date on theso two schemes”, concluded the Minister “totals £86,000, a very substantial contribution by the Unemployment Board in the interests of the primary industries,” <•
