UNEMPLOYMENT LEVY
DETAILED EXPLATATION. METHOD OF ADJUSTMENT. Though a great deal of plainly-word-ed information has been published, both officially and by the principal newspapers of the Dominion, concerning the General Unemployment Levy imposed by the Unemployment Amendment Act, 1931, there still appears to be some doubt about the incidence of the levy and the method of adjusting the new dates and rate of payment with th© dates and rate under the Principal Act. The chief cause of this doubt is the belief that because the levy is payable quarterly it covers a period of three months. The fact is that the amount payable is twenty shillings per annum payable quarterly or yearly at the option of the taxpayer. The first instalment of five shillings was payable on Ist August, and has no relation whatever to September and October. Each payment is a definite sum due on a definite date. There has been some confusion of ideas among people who have paid the September levy under the principal Act, but the adjustment has been effected very simply by the Post and Telegraph officials. An amount of 2/6 of the 7/6 paid wil lbe carried forward to the November instalment of the new levy, and when this becomes due . those people concerned will need to pay only 2/6. Any other instalments of the levy under the 1930 Act that have been paid will be ' similarly adjusted, bu| if an amount has beep paid which is more than sufficient to cover all Instalments due up j-o and including that of August, 1932, a refund of the excess will be made by the Post and Telegraph Department.
