A HIGHER PENALTY

SUPPRESSION OF NAME. PECULIAR COMPENSATION. WELLINGTON, August 7. A heavier- fine than usual in compensation for the suppression of the defendant’s name was imposed by Mr W. H. Woodward. SSL, in the Magistrate’s Court at Lower Hutt, upon an elderly man who pleaded guilty to a ..charge o p having been unlawfully on tho Trentham racecourse, from which he was excluded under the Gaming Act because of a, conviction for theft.

The frets of the case, as given by Detective "VV. M’Lennan. were substantially agreed to' by Mr It. W. Bothamley, who appeared for the defendant. Mr Botbnmley said that twelve years ago his client had been convicted of theft and bad paid the penalty. Since then he had gone straieht and bad built up a successful business in Wellington. For the present offence he Sid not wish to escape punishment, but he did hot want it to fall upon his wife and family, which would happen if his name was published. Mr Botbamley ashed that the name be suppressed. Mr Woodwward said that it was part of the penalty that a man’s wife and family should have to bear .the odium resulting from a conviction. ' If he averted that he would have to compensate for it by a higher monetary penalty. He would suppress the name and impose a fine of £ls.
