JOHNSON MURDER
GUILTY OF MURDER. VERDICT ON RAMEKA. RECOMMENDATION TO MERCY. (Ihj Telegraph—Per Press A ssociation) AUCKLAND, August 0. After a retirement of three hours and twenty-three minutes, the jury at the Supreme Court found Pahara Rameka Kere (George Rameka), aged 31 years, guilty of the murder of Mrs Gwendoline Alice Johnson, at. Randolph Street, Newton, ‘on June 24tli. last.
The verdict contained a strong recommendation to mercy. 'mV Justice Smith,' turning to the prisoner, .said: “You did not establish that you were insane at the time that you committed the offence, and it is equally clear that you are not entitled to any reduction of the crime from murder to manslaughter. The jury’s recommendation to mercy will _be forwarded to the proper quarter.” His Honor then placed the.; black cap, and sentenced the prisoner to death. His Honor said to the jury: “I am satisfied the verdict was the only one >oii could properly find.”
