Lovers of the light fantastic are reminded that the grand ball in aid of St. Paul’s, Arahura, takes place tomorrow (Friday) evening, when very complete arrangements have been made for a jolly evening. A sumptuous home made supper awaits you. So all roads will lead to Toker’s Hall to the Grand Ball.
So far as can be seen at present the higher excise duty on New Zea land-brewed beer, which now stands a Is 6d a gallon instead of Is, will almost certainly be passed on, in part, at least, to the consumer (says the “New Zealand Herald”) The questio.. will not- be settled, however, until a conference has been held by represen tatives of the brewing interest.; throughout New Zealand. “The ex eessive increase of fid a gallon is equ,V to 27s a hogshead,” stated Sir Alfred Bankart, speaking on behalf of New Zealand Breweries Limited. “Obviously such a charge cannot be borne by either the breweries or the hote - keepers. In order to get to the bottom of th • number of complaints received abou. the New Zealand cheese that was being put on the English market, the Whc nuakura Dairy Factory Company ask ed for a crate of cheese to be returned to New Zealand • During the last week in July this came to hand —t crate made on November sth, 1930, and passed at 93 per cent by. the Government grader at Paten. The cheese wm cut up and banded to the directors <• the dairy company, each of these pronounced that the cheese was improved in flavour, if anything. At the mos' it was no Different in constitenc.v from that sold in the Dominion. It was also no lower in grading than when it wa first exported. ,Tlie grading officer stated that it would be graded at the same rate. 93 per cent. The only different* in the cheese was in the appearance, the outside being slightly mildewed.
