HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONDAY, AUGUST 3rd. The Committee met at 7 p.m. Present:—Messrs A. C. Armstrong (Chair), Sweney, Redder, Chesterman, Breeze, Richards and Conning. An apology was made for Mr Shannon. The minutes were confirmed and correspondence outward approved.
J N WAR I) CO RR ESPON BENCE. The question of installing electric light was left to the Chairman and Rector. The Chairman moved that Mr W. Searle be written to in reference to his statement at the County Council meeting in reference to dental' treatment at South Westland schools, and that lie be asked to withdraw same. Seconded by Mr Richards and carried. From Winter 'Show Committee Christchurch suggesting visit.—. Received ; no action being taken.
From Empire Service League, notifying conference at Christchurch.-—Re-ceived. From Department of Health, Wellington. stating, a dental officer was now stationed at Ross.—-Received. From Westland County Council, declining vote for dental clinic.—Received. From Airs E Died rich, Hnrihari, re dental treatment of children.—Received . From Dental Officers reportingMiss James 143 attendances, 538 operations. Aliss Pitt 136 attendance's, 160 operations.—Received. The Secretary was directed to write to Knnicri and Woodstock School Committees asking for donations to the dental clinic. —Re ce ive d. RECTOR’S REPORT. The Rector reported the roll number was secondary 105, average 99.7; primary 334, and 304.3, I’Jio present roll number in the Infant Department is now 100, and in view of the fact that the staffing has been curtailed this year, I would ask your Committee to consider the desirability of accepting no more new entrants this year. If the usual influx were to take place in the last term, the work of this Department would be too onerous for two teachers to cope with. Buildings:—The new class-room is now complete, and has resulted in an increased measure of comfort for tl.e infant children. The one shelter shed has been floored and the flooring of the other is in progress. Thu now hell-tower has been erected. Sport:—'rile past month was an active one in sport. In the primary school, matches at Home and in Greymouth have been played, the games resulting in honours being even. , In the basket-ball competitions our primary school teams have not as yet met with marked success. On Saturday last 3 basket-ball teams ami one football team from the High School vrsited-:Greynioutli to-play matches against Technical College. The gills of the A and B teams were successful, the C team being defeated by only ono goal. - After a. very hard fought game on a very soft ground, our hoys went down before tbe superior weight and comhiimatioii of Technical College, hut despite their defeat the performance especially of the forwards, was a sterling one. This was the first round of the Newman Shield Matches. s School Concert:—ln view of the difficulty of obtaining suitable dates for the Theatre, the Concert lias been postponed until the second week of the final term, Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th September.—Received. The Visiting Committee (Messrs Sweney and Redder) reported on visit. Received. Messrs Chesterman and Richards are next month’s visitors. The Treasurer’s report was read and received.
