The death took place in the Buller Hospital on Saturday morning of Airs PetlierlVridge, wife of Air Arthur Potherbridge. of the Railway Signal staff. Deceased, who bad been in the hospital for some time, came home, but was taken seriously ill again and returned to pass away unexpectedly on Saturday morning. At the Magistrate’s Court, Greymouth, Joseph Michael Clarke was charged that, at Greymouth on July 81, lie broke and entered the shop of Messrs Duncan McLean, Ltd., and stole 18 watches and one electric torch, of a total value of £l7 4s. DetectiveSergeant Holmes, in asking for a remand, stated that accused was arrested on Saturday, and further enquiries had to be made. The S.M. granted a remand until Wednesday. Clarke was also charged that, on July 31, at Greymouth, he stole an overcoat, valued at £5, the property of John Stuart Loss. The Detective-Sergeant stated that the coat disappeared from the peg on which it was hanging in the Albion Hotel, and was subsequently found in •the possession of accused. Clarke pleaded guilty, and was remanded for sentence until Wednesday, at the request of the Detective-Sergeant.

Canon Staples Hamilton, vicar of St. Albans, intends to retire from act” work shortly before Christmas. He has been in the ministry for forty-nine years, wholly in the Christchurch Diocese, serving as curate in Heatli-cot-e and in Ellesmere, and as vicar of Leeston, Hokitika and Geraldine (twenty-one years). Amending regulations under the Dairy Industry Act, 1903, as to the manufacture and export of dairy produce have been gazetted. They relate principally to the prohibition on socalled “standardised” and “cheddar” cheese. One clause requires that fullcream cheese manufactured during August and September shall be kept on shelves for not less than 21 days, and full-cream cheese manufactured dining any other months of the year shall be stored on shelves for not less than 14 days after manufacture. The air in curing-rooms containing cheese intended for removal within one month after its manufacture is to be maintained at a temperature cf not less than 55 degrees Falir. The temperature of butter at the time of delivery from flic store for export shall not exceed 15 degrees Falir., and the temperature of cheese at the same point of time shall not be less than 50 nor more than 55 degrees Falir.
