In the course of her reply, for the Government ,in the debate on health insurance, in the House of Commons, Aliss Susan Lawrence (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health) admitted that, making all allowances for special circumstances, such as unemployment-, the growth of the expenditure. in benefits under the Health Insurance Scheme did not seem to he justified by the health of the nation. There was a remarkable number ot short illnesses, and the increase in the benefits paid to young men was unexpected.
