INCREASE IN CRIME

YOUNC MEN AND ECONOMIC DEPRESSION. AUCKLAND, July 23.-'.. “There appears to have been a considerable increase of serious crime in the Auckland district during the past year,” said Mr Justice Smith, in addressing the grand jury at the opening oi the criminal session of the Supreme Court. “Many of the case have arisen out of offences against property,” continued his Bomur. “No doubt this increase is due to the prevailing economic depression. Among those involved there have been many young men. Probably they have been out of work and have become somewhat adventurous, with the result that they have taken to breaking and entering and theft to replenish their pockets.” His Honour said it appeared that any philautropic efforts directto to assisting single young men at the present time should have some effect on the diminution of serious crime in the district. Most of the efforts at present were directed to other than young men.
