GISBORNE MEETING. . STEEPLES A FIASCO. GISBORNE, July 23! The steeplechase meeting of the Gisborne Racing Club opened to-day in j dull weather, with a fair attendance. ] The course was in particularly good 1 condition. The tote’s investments were j £4,112, as compared with £9,826 for the first day last year. The principal race the Gisborne Steeples, was a fiasco. I Out of the 1 five acceptors only two i started, Handy and Kainehameha, | After almost completing a circuit of the course Kamehamelia, refused to i face the jump in front of the stand j though repeatedly put to it by his j pilot, Mjcllroy, and Handy went on and : won by a circuit. Eventually Kamehameha took the stand jump, but then refused others in succession, but after repeated attempts he completed the course in time to gain second place. Results:—• Park Hurdles.—2 Battlement 1, 5 Whakaari 2, 1 Princess Elizabeth 3. Won by half a head; a length. Time 3.17. Maiden Handicap.—l Lordly Knight 1,2 Sunny Song 2, 3 Megaphone 3. Won by a head: a neck. Time 1.3. Flying Handicap.—4 Freehold 1, 1 Hunting Day 2, 3 Whit* Famr 3. Won by a neck ; a length. Time 1.15. Gisborne Steeples.—l Handy 1. Kainehameha 2. Won by a circuit.
