SOUTHLAND LOCAL BODIES PROTEST. INVERCARGILL, July 22. At a meeting this afternoon of Southlandlocal bodies,. convened by;'-' the- : Southland Motor Association the following resolution was carried:' “That this meeting of representatives of. the Southland County Council, the Wallace County Council ,the Invercargill City Council, the Gore Borough. Council, the Southland Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union and the Southland Motor Association reaffirms the resolution passed at a former conference on August 16, 11)30, and now strongly protests against any proposal having as its object the appropriation off motor taxation, including motor registrations and tyre,taxes, for any purpose'other than the construction and . maintenance of roads and streets. That the conference strongly opposes any, diversion of funds from the Alain Highways Board and is of opinion that such action, if taken, would lie a distinct breach df faith with the ratepayers mad motorists of the Dominion.” The conference had been called following receipt of a circular from the Wellington Automobile Club reporting that the Prime Minister had stated that he was not in favour of earmarking taxation Ifor any purpose.
