A STIFF PENALTY.
FORFEITURE OF COIN.

AUCKLAND, July 23. A Fmes totalling costs £6 6s and; ~ forfeiture of £ll.s7'was the penalty .indicted on Irene Dobson;-35, to-day for importing Australian silver coins. The, Crown Prosecutor -said the ‘ acney under various names and on May 17 she landed, at Wellington with £6j of silver. In July she brought over . £I4OO, whic'’ two ships officers took to -her in an hotel in Auckland after the arrival o'-' the Marama. Those two men had been fined in Wellington and the police her: seized £989 in the hotel. The total imported was £I4OO. The offence we; committed deliberately after a warning. Accused’s counsel pleaded that lik many others in Australia, the accuse-! was terrified of the possibility of losing all she had in Australia and that apprehension was reasonable. She had paid the ship’s officers fine.
The Crown Prosecutor said the Com"'' must deal with the offence and mak the punishment sufficiently detereni. Counsel’s proper course was to apply to the Minister of Customs.
William Bennett McGregor, 52, mill hand, was fined £25 for being in possession of Australian silver. He distributed as the tool of Dobson in getting silver changed. " -A i
