REPAIRING RESIDENCES
NAPIER, July 20. Of 4000 odd houses at Napier, over 2500 have been the subject of applications .to the Earthquake Relief Committee for assistance in carrying out repairs, the average cost being in the viciliity of £55; In addition, applications are still cprrting in from.owners of houses who had carried out. and paid for repairs before the announcement of the scheme Whereby they also could benefit up to .£IOO, Applications from property owners for finance to carry out repnivs up to £IOO number 2014, and there are an additional .60 which -deal only with drainage. Of this number 1200 have been investigated, and 800 received payment. . A.s there are a number of people who have carried out repairs and paid for them out of their own finances, they have been, given; the opportunity to participate in the relief'funds. Applications sent to Reconstruction Department from this class, which closes at the end of this month, have up to date been 150. It is probaple that this number will be trebled, or more. Roughly speaking, out of 4023 houses at Napier owners of 2524 will make application for assistance out of available funds. The average amount applied for is, £55, the total amount based on these figures therefore being £138,820. This does not take into consideration the amount paid out by the (Public Works Department for the erection of Chimneys, which were carried out in the first month or so following the earthquake.
