The death occurred yesterday at. Kumara of Mr Wiilinm Henry Batson, who for some years past had been m business there as storekeeper. The late Mr Batson, who was 78 years of age, had had a varied career, having been before coining to New Zealand a member of the British Army in India, where he had many unique experiences, which he was ever ready to recall. He was the first to conduct a hostel in the Waiho district, near the Franz Josef Glacier, where Messrs Graham Bros, now have a large establishment, later Mr Batson was the licensee of Exchange Hotel at Hokitika, and then became caretaker of the Old People s Home at Kumara, where lie was subsequently engaged in business. He was a genial personality, and many old friends will regret to learn of his death. He leaves,a wife and family, to whom the sympathy of their many friends will be extended in their bereavement.
