Tiie proposal emanating from Ross, and outlined in the petition presented to Parliament recently by the Member for Westland, on behalf of the petitioners asking that' Ross be made the terminus of the railway system from Otira, would create some surprise locally. The fact that a similar petition was presented by Mr O’Brien also to the Postmaster-General, suggests that the main objective must be postal, in connection with the through traffic. If this be so, a large amount of general inconvenience will be, caused should the prayer of the petition be granted. Hokitika is the natural centre and jumping off place for all Westland resorts. It is the recognised postal centre, and here also are situated the motor garages capable of handling the principal tourist traffic of the district, that affecting, South Westland. The'motor services as at present operating all serve Ross practically on every day of the week, affording a much more convenient service for tarvellers, than it is possible to secure by any adjustment of the railway time-table. At Hokitika ' the railway station,'' post office and motor garages are in close juxtaposition, greatly facilitating me handling of the mails. The actual position is in strong contrast with the state of affairs at Ress where the post office and railway station are a mile apart. Actually there is not any-com-parison between the conveniences, for transport and traffic and accommodation as between the two centres, and no .doubt the Government .realising this will not dislocate the present satisfactory arrangements.
