'The storm is . now mver, : but > .tb'e roads to .Southland .and . to' Central Otago via Lawrence, are still-''blocked by snow.
The snowfall about 4 p.m;/- ’yesterday was the end of the storm, and a hard frost set in before nightfall. To-day the weather has been clear and sunny. Over 80 men were employed to-day on clearing the main highway between Milton and Balclutha. At Stormy Creek, the drifts .are very deep, and one motorist and his car disappeared from sight when- he attempted 'to force "a" passage-" through the drifts there yesterday; Balclutha is also isolated '. front fhe soiith, the ‘snow 1 now being ' 1 two’' feet deep 'on the road to Clinton, ’ofi :; which the Cltit*lia County i Couiicfp'ha'cr big staffs-working to-day. 1 v -Traffic fioni' Gatlin’s is encountering difficulties too, there being eight and a half inches of snow on the flat at Chvaka.' ‘ • ; ' 1 ' -Th' s'-ow has’ been a very serious matter for the travelling public.” said the Secretary of the Motor Club. The- v.conclifcpii of the .roads, so far as the snow.vis concerned, has."greatly improved, and although in some districts buses are still meeting with difficulty, generally speaking the traffic conditions are now approaching normal. The telegraph service has not been interrupted by snow in any part of the province.
