flVe death occured about noon on Saturday of Sister Mary Xavier, of the Grey mouth Convent of Mercy. Deathwas due to heart failure, from which deceased had suffered for the past few years. She was well known the Convent Infant Department, where she spent her long and devoted religious life. She was a native of Menagli County Tipperary, Ireland, and is susvived by her sister, Sister M-arv Alphonus, of Grcymouth Convent of Mercy.

The New Zealand Road Cycling Championship will again be held in the South Island and will take place on October 3rd., the course being the same as last year, from Waimate to Christchurch, a total distance of 145 miles. The race will take the place of the famous Timaru-to-Christclmrch road race which has been held on twenty-one occasions since 1899 and which lias been the means to bringing out many famous athletes; In the past, great interest has been evinced in the race which has attracted riders from all over New Zealand. It is anticipated that with the present boom in cycle racing this year’s event will attract a record entry. The race is being organised by the North Canterbury Centre of the N.Z. Athletic. Cycling and Axemen’s Union—Mr P. C. Imeas, Secretary—which body js at present engaged in raising funds in order that the prize list may be wortjiy of the event.

An up to date hall, known as the “Fox Glacier Hall,’’ has just been completed at the instance of the enterprising Messrs 'Sullivan Bros, of Weheka. The building is most comfortable, being large and commodious with an elaborate stage 1 and having all the conveniences of a town theatre. It is electrically lit and an all electric wireless set has been installed for dancing. To commemorate the opening a public concert and dance will be held on Saturday, 25th hist. Local talent assisted by visiting performers will comprise the concert programme, whilst Wilson’s Orchestra and the wireless will supply the music for the dance. Supper is to be provided by the ladies of the district and intending visitors to the function can assure themselves of a good outing. The proceeds will be devoted to the local school fund.
