A LARGE INCREASE

In the House of Commons, Mr LeesSmith speaking on the Education Department vote, said that lie was asking for a. vote of a little over fourteen millions sterling. This was an Increase of about three millions sterling on last vote. He stated .that about ten per cent, of the general population were in giant-earning secondary schools. The proposition was' about four times as great as it was 25 years ago, This was having far-reaching consequences, One v?as an increasing invasion of the monopoly which the middle-class schools and the public schools had hitherto had of higher professional and administrative position. Referring to the result of the system- of state scholarships for secondary school children t-o the universities, he said the records of eleven years showed that 52 per cent, of the men obtained first class honours, and 28 per cent, of the women. Reviewing the work of the schools, the Min-ister-said that he was quite convinced that within 20 years they would have produced a new. and remarkable type, healthy, practical, self-reliant, responsible and more capable than any previous generation, and better equipped -o meet the tremendous problems of the next generation.
