THOUGHTS OF THE TIMES.

CONFISCATION OF UNDEVELOPED LAND. The confiscation of privately owned undeveloped land for the purposes of unemployed relief was urged by Mr A. Harris (Waitemata), who stated in the House that if Crown lands were unavailable, many private owners who had been holding land year after year without an attempt at development should be compelled to develop, it or dispose of it. If half or 75 per cent, of the cost of breaking in this land could be returned to the Unemployment Board’s funds from the produce sold it would he more satisfactory than the dead loss now being suffered from the expenditure of these funds upon useless work.
