ELECTORAL ROLLS
DUTY OF VOTERS. The main rolls to be used at the forthcoming general election closed on Wednesday. Although electors.are not compelled to exercise their franchise, every person qualified to vote must take steps to see that his or her name is on the roll. The applicant must be 21 years of age or ovety and a British subject either by birth or by naturalisation in New Zealand.
The old rolls and supplementary rolls will be consolidated, with the necessary alterations, and will be printed as soon as possible. Then they will be made available for inspection. The electoral staffs will have to repeat the process in dealing with the new supplementary rolls. Aliens who have become naturalised citizens in other Dominions are not ■ eligible Ifor enrolment. Other conditions are 12 months’ residence, in New Zealand, at any time, not necessarily immediately prior to enrolment;, and three months’ continuous residence iii' the electorate in which enrolment is sought. In order not to cause any hardship, special provisions have been included in the Act to cover the cases of commercial travellers, seamen, and members of the theatrical profession. In addition to providing a penalty for failure to enrol, the Act requires' elector on the roll to notify, a change of address, whether to nnoriiet electorate or to another address in the same district. Failure to notify the registrar is punishable by ft o. • When householders give the postal officials written notification of a change, they are asked to fill in a: form attached to the foot of the notice, that portion being- forwarded by the post office to the registrar. There are many others means apart from these forms, and from direct notification by which the registrar is able to keep rolls up to date. As he also acts as registrar of deaths the names of deceased persons are removed as soon as the notification of death is received, and the names of women are altered on marriage, as the registrar also acts as registrar of marriages.
