HEAVY RAINFALL

MASTER TON, July 10

Heavy rainfall has been falling for the past twenty hours and the rivers are in high flood. Much of the low lying country is inundated ar.d roads in many parts of the district are under water. Minor damage is reported.

FIRE AT STRATFORD. STRATFORD, Julv 10

A fire broke out in W, MacDonald's grocery last night. The hack portion was completely gutted. • The stock at the rear was ruined and goods in the front damaged by smoke and water.

The premises of a dye works next door, were also damaged, but the stock was removed before the flames reached it.

MacDonald's building was insured for £4OO, stock £1,250 and fittings £135.

A TEMPORARY IMPROVEMENT

CHRISTCHURCH, July 10

The weather conditions show a temporary improvement, but snow is still falling in parts and breaks in the telegraph lines to the West Coast have not been repaired. Railway work at Arthur’s Pass proceeds slowly owing to deep snow drift. Near Waiau the snow is twenty inches deep.
