A torrential thunderstorm at the height of the festivities, compelled the abandonment of • a garden party at Holvrood Palace. The guests rushed to the gates to board trams and omnibuses and scrambled to shelter. Parasols were useless. Dresses, summer hats and silk hats were ruined.
Their Majesties returned to the Palace from the tea marquee, but the Duke and Duchess of York and members of their suite were caught in the downpour. Thousands of spectators were drenched. The guests’ clothes were estimated to cost £IOO,OOO and the damage assessed is £50,000.
