PARLIAMENT

The council.

a bill Defeated

(fly Telcgraph-~~Per Press Association)

WELLINGTON, July 10. The Legislative Council mot at U a.m. In moving the second reading of the Dominion Life Assurance Office of New Zealand Limited Bill, Hon. Hall Jones said a majority of life insurances companies in New Zealand were foreign and the money was invested abroad. When the Company was formed, it was iound it was impossible to register in New Zealand and the Company had registered in New South Wales. The purport of the Hill was to enable the Company to register in 'New Zealand. Sir F. D. Bell said he hoped the Government would not consent to the Bill, which amounted to an extraordinary attempt to evade the provisions of the Companies Act. There were good reasons why limited liability life insmance companies could not register in New Zealand.

Sir Thomas Sidev said he was having a report prepared in connection with the Bill. It was rather anomalous that they allowed foreign companies to operate in New Zealand and prevented New Zealand companies doing likewise . On division the second reading was defeated bv 16 to 13.
