CHEQUE FRAUD
CULPRIT CIVEN PROBATION. (By Telegraph —Per Press Association ) WELLINGTON, July 3. Arthur Anderson, motor driver-, aged. 53, pleaded guilty to a charge of obtaining £27 10s from George Hancox, by means of a valueless cheque. He was admitted to probation for two years, by Mr Page, at the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Sub-Inspector Ward, stated that accused went into the tailoring establishment of Hancox, in Christchurch. He was measured for a suit, and an. overcoat. He was asked to pay a~ deposit, and he said he would pay £7 10s if a cheque were cashed for him. The accused went away and returned later with a cheque for £35. signed by the Manager of the Wainui Store, Coy. No such company existed, but the informant, believing that the cheque was genuine, cashed it, and gave £27 10s in change.. As: far as was known, the accused had! never been before the court previously,'
The Magistrate ordered Anderson to* repay the £27 10s and to tak o\n £V prohibition order.
