Perkins united in marriage Capt. Geoffrey Heal, of Wellington, aideeamp to the Administrator and Miss Helen Burkitt, of Sydney. The bride was given away by the Administrator, whose eldest daughter Mary was bridesmaid. A reception and dance given by the Administrator and Mrs Hart, at Government House, Vailima, was largely attended. The young couple leave on Thursday afternooh by the Maui Pomare for New Zealand.

COLOGNE, July 2
Kuerten spent the night writing letters of contrition to the relatives of many of his victims and went to the guillotine unfalteringly. AFRICAN RAILWAY . (Received this day at 8 a.m.) CAPETOWN, July 2. Linking up the railway from Labito Bay in Portuguese territory, Angola, to the main system running through Belgian Congo was officially celebrated at the point where it crosses from one territory to the other. A traveller can now go entirely by rail across Africa from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean. The railway is 1180 miles long. The formal opening to-day, was the anniversary ol' the founding of Congo Free State, now Belgian Congo.
A SUICIDE
BOMBAY, July 1. Tragedy was enacted on the sands at Junu, a fashionable seaside resort of Bombay, yesterday, when an Australian airman, Captain Harry Darby, suicided by poisoning. Darby was the airman responsible for the death of a rickshawrnan on -March 27th at Karachi Darby left two letters, one of them saying he was suiciding, but giving no reason. He bad been living on a lavish scale at a hotel at -Juiiu. VATICAN AND FASCISM. LONDON, July 2. “The TiinesV’ Rome correspondent says: The Vatican’s fifth note protesting against the Fascists’ attacks on the Roman Catholic institutions demand from the Italian Government a definite apology for the insults to the Pope, and the damage clone to Pontiticial property. An allegation that the Holy See is carrying on political activity was emphatically denied. CALAMITY THREATENS CANADA. OTTAWA, July I. Expressing the fear that Canada is faced perhaps with the “the greatest national calamity that has ever overtaken this country” as the result of the serious drought, which has prevailed in Saskatchewan and sections of Alberta and Manitoba, the Premier, Air Bennett, announced in the House of Commons to-day, that lie would submit to Parliament a measure for the relief of the sufferers. Mr Bennett also announced that it was bis first intention to submit to Parliament unemployment relief measures.
CONFERENCE DECLINED

It is understood that France has declined the British invitation to a conference on the Hoover Plan at London at the week end. United States was not opposed to the suggestion.
