FIRE DISASTER
LOSS OF SIX LIVES. MAORI AND FIVE! CHILDREN. (By Telegraph —Per Press Association) HAMILTON, July 2. A native named Rangi Ma.teh.are and five children, were burned to death when, the whare took fire at Paparama, Maori Pah, near Putaruru, last evening. Apparently the family retired to rest early. The whare consisted of merely two rooms, which were heated by embers .in a kerosene tin. Some of these are believed to have set the wall on fire. The roof collapsed and trapped the family while asleep./ Tile father apparently made a desperate effort to save his young children whose ages range froth two to twelve,x but was only (successful lit placing a gi.fl Of six through a whitlow to safety,' when he was overcome by smoko and flames. The whiu'c wax built into a cutting in a bank and was about 10 chains from the next dwelilng in the Pah. The remaining inhabitants were unaware of the ho locust until awakened by the cries of the only survivor. There was no water in the Pa,h and they could then only stand by and watch the flames consume the dwelling and six souls within.
