A message from Hamilton, Ontario, states five persons were kill d to-dav i(Dominion Day) in a monoplane crash at Hamilton air port, The d"arl are Harold R-aine of Toronto, general superintendent of Canadian Press, aged 38 ; J. S. Maher, owner of the plane ; Charles ; L. Daly, jun'or, a parachute jumper of Toronto; -Alfred Rogers of Ham : I ton ; and Captain Robert Sterling, a Montreal pilot. Following a flight over the city the pilot dipped downward but seeing a crowd near the landing place tried to swerve upward, but lost control, as the fabric of the left wing ripped, sending 'the craft over on its back, and crash 1 ng 150 feet. All were dead except Rogers, who dkd in the ambulance.
Railie was one of Canada’s best known newspapermen. He stai'trd as an office boy 'in the Western Associated .Pi'eSs, Was on the 'Canadian Press for seventeen years and rose quickly to the post of General Superintendent and TreSideilt of the organisation. The accident cast a gloom over what was to have been a brilliant carnival inaugurating a tvatie-Canada air tour. The plane was one of the largest of the fleet and. was expected to travel to the Pacific Coast and back after two days celebration here.
Raine was attending the ceremonies as a staff writer for the Canadian Press.
