BIBLE IN SCHOOLS
A NOVEL ARGUMENT
i By Telegraph, Per Press Association, j NELSON, July 1Referring l<) the Bible in Schools Bill, in his presidential address at the Nelson Anglican Synod. Die Bishop of Nelson, Dr. Sadlior, said: “For many years past, I have been asking the following question: Gan anyone give any reason why State school toaeheis. during school hours, as part oi the curriculum, and without a Goiiscienc-' Clause may give a lesson on the idol “Ji/,o, ’’ Japanese saviour of children, to children of Christian parents im whom no Conscience Clause is pro.ke d and may not, even with a Conscience Glance, give a lessen on Jestis Christ. I have put this questii n in public, and I have put it in wiiting. to the Committee pi the Idolise.,o! Assembly.;, aiid ’there'’had* been no answer forthcoming. 1: the proposed Bill should pass this question, it will become impossible for the future. Our contention is that the facts upon which my question is based are an affront to the name of Jesus Christ. We have sought in every legitimate way to remove this obloquy from the fair name of our country, and shall never rest until the name of Jesus Christ is given, by law, a, definite place in the curriculum of the National schools. Wo base 0111 claim upon our common Christian convictions, on the known needs of children, and on important national ground. The nation that permits ol lessons being given on what we believe to he idolatry, and excludes lessons on Jesus Christ, stands in danger of being changed with anti-Christ-bias.”
